Grief Resources

Each individual's grief is distinct to them, as the loss and relationship is uniquely theirs.  Although grief coaching can be extremely beneficial for some, others may benefit from different or supplementary resources.

Empathy.com

Empathy.com helps individuals navigate many of the logistics that come after a loss like funeral planning, paying debts, claiming benefits, and dealing with property.

Therapy

Coaching can be enhanced by previous or ongoing therapy experiences, but it should not be considered a substitute for therapy. It's crucial to seek the help of a mental health professional when dealing with specific traumas and mental health conditions, especially during the grieving process. Here's a few resources by location:

David Kessler is a top grief expert and provides a variety of free resources and (paid) programs through grief.com.  Below are just a few.

  • Tender Hearts  is an online grief program that I've personally participated and benefited in, with micro-doses of learning and reflection each week and an optional opportunity to connect with others, including David, virtually.

  • Free access to podcasts and topic or holiday-based sessions

  • Additional resources to unique types of grief like the loss of a child and death by suicide.

  • A directory of Certified Grief Educators including therapists, coaches, doulas, and more.

Compassionate Friends | Child Loss

The loss of a child can be uniquely painful.  Compassionate Friends is a non-profit organization focused on creating a community of healing for those who have lost a child.

Journaling

Grief Journals can often help people reflect on their own experience, honor their loved one, and even converse with them.  Here is one of my favorites.

Meditation and Yoga

As David Kessler says, "You Can't Heal What You Don't Feel." Mindfulness activities like meditation and yoga can help pull yourself into the present moment, honor your experience, and care for the grief that your body may be physically holding onto.

  • This is a great starting place to explore the benefits of grief meditation, and get access to free meditations.

  • A quick google search can provide virtual and local grief yoga opportunities.

Grieving Children

The National Alliance for Children's Grief is a national network of professionals who are passionate about providing support, community and resources for children navigating loss.

Books

Reading books about grief can often enhance our understanding and validate our own experiences, while deepening an awareness that no two people grieve in the same way.  View Alexandra's Bookshelf for a starting place on exploring adult and children's books about grief.
